Most people, if not everyone, has heard of Winter the dolphin with the prosthetic tail. Her story begins December 10, 2005. She was rescued in Mosquito Lagoon from the ropes of a crab trap. The ropes were entangled in her tail and cut off circulation. After being rescued, the ropes were removed but her tail couldn’t be saved. It eventually deteriorated which caused Winter to swim side to side instead of the regular up and down movement recognized in the dolphins. Winter’s story is one of great inspiration and people of all ages with prosthetics of their own have visited her at the Clearwater Water Aquarium where she is cared for along with the other rescued dolphins, Hope and Nicholas.
The aquarium’s main goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and potentially release marine animals to ensure they and their environments are healthy. The aquarium’s website offers educational tips, each of their dolphin’s stories and links to live webcams where site visitors can watch the dolphins and other animals swim around just like in Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2.
I hope I am able to visit the aquarium one day and see these beautiful marine animals for myself. It seems like an amazing opportunity for all animal lovers.
