On April 3, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, or the ICIJ, released millions of confidential documents identifying politicians, celebrities, and businesses connected to Mossack Fonseca, a law firm in Panama, connecting them to a network of suspicious financial activity; the so-called ‘Panama Papers’ have caused a stir around the world.
The media release was in collaboration with the ICIJ and hundreds of news organizations. The files originated from an anonymous source that claimed ”to be concerned about what he or she saw in the documents,” said Gerard Ryle, the director of ICIJ.
The papers named prominent world figures from King Salman of Saudi Arabia to soccer player Lionel Messi. Associates of President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron.
